Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Esophageal cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. Western countries have seen a 500% increase in the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma, which parallels the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity. This correlation suggests progression from GERD to pre-cancerous Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal adenocarcinoma. A lack of specific biomarkers makes it impossible to predict which patients will progress.
This Special Issue of the Journal of Clinical Medicine will focus on the current understanding of the progression of GERD to cancer, the available modalities to halt the progression at various stages, and elaborate on the current standards of care for early and locally advanced esophageal adenocarcinoma.
We hope that this Special Issue will bring together the expertise of a broad spectrum of esophageal specialists and highlight exciting advances in the field that will ultimately improve the care of all patients with esophageal disease, from GERD to esophageal cancer.
