Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) encompass a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by diverse clinical behaviour and different outcomes, ranging from rapid progression towards severe disease and death, to periods of disease stability or even improvement under appropriate treatment.
Pre-existing or emerging comorbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, obstructive sleep apnoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux, and acute or chronic infections, can complicate the clinical course of ILDs. These comorbidities have a dramatic impact on quality of life, respiratory status, and overall outcomes. In this regard, the prompt recognition of these conditions and the timely initiation of treatment are of paramount importance.
In recent years, the field of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) has made remarkable progress, providing deeper insights into the complex interplay between ILDs and their associated comorbidities. This has enabled the development of more precise diagnostic tools and tailored therapeutic strategies.
This Special Issue aims at highlighting some of the most impactful recent advances in this field, offering insights into the underlying mechanisms linking ILDs to comorbidities, refining innovations in imaging, biomarkers, and clinical tools for the early detection of comorbid conditions, and presenting novel pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies targeting comorbidities to improve patient outcomes.
