Latest Advances and Prospects in Management of Polytrauma Patients

Dear Colleagues,

Polytrauma remains a global health concern and has been identified as a key issue for the future of healthcare by the World Health Organization. Despite advances in diagnostic and treatment algorithms, trauma remains a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide and represents a prominent cause of mortality in young adults due to increased road traffic accidents. In acute and emergency settings, the healthcare costs spent on dealing with polytrauma are statistically proven to be significantly higher than the costs spent elsewhere. Adopting a multimodal approach for the treatment of polytraumatized patients has been proven to lead to better results in terms of outcome. However, in our opinion, we could improve several steps in the treatment of this complex condition, and we could deepen our comprehension of the pathophysiological and immunological response to trauma. With this Special Issue, we want to provide an update about the latest advances and prospects in the management of this group of patients. We encourage the submission of original articles and systematic reviews from specialists involved in the management of polytraumatized patients. We invite researchers in the polytrauma field to submit their contributions in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of this issue from a wide spectrum of perspectives. We hope that our work will have a positive impact on the development of effective strategies to improve outcomes in this group of patients.
