Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Onco-gastroenterology is a subspecialty that not only covers gastrointestinal and liver cancer, but also covers any cancer and cancer-related treatment and its effect on the gut and liver. Medical and surgical oncologists and gastroenterologists have been treating gastrointestinal cancer for decades by removing the tumor, implementing chemotherapy and/or radiation, performing a partial hepatectomy if needed, and assessing the patient to determine if liver transplantation may be required. Onco-neurogastroenterology is a new discipline that deals with gastrointestinal dysmotility and altered sensation in patients with cancer. These functional issues may occur at different phases in cancer evolution, including during the pre-cancer state (i.e., Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal achalasia), during the active cancer phase, and particularly during its treatment (i.e., chemotherapy or surgery), or months or years later, during the cancer survivorship phase, which is typically a result of prior cancer treatment (i.e., radiation). In this review, prepared by experts at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, USA, we highlight the essential elements of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of such patients to optimize their clinical care and maximize their quality of life.
