Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Corneal diseases, encompassing a broad spectrum of conditions that affect the transparency, biomechanics, and endothelial function of the cornea, remain a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide. Continuous advances in diagnostics, imaging, and surgical techniques are rapidly transforming how these disorders are identified and managed. This Special Issue aims to provide a focused and clinically relevant overview of current and emerging concepts in corneal disease, with particular emphasis on the link between accurate diagnosis and optimal therapeutic decision-making.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, meta-analyses, and high-quality clinical studies addressing both common and complex corneal conditions. Topics of particular interest include keratoconus and other ectatic disorders, advances in corneal imaging and biomechanics, disease staging, progression risk stratification, and treatment strategies such as corneal cross-linking, intracorneal ring segments, and keratoplasty.

Submissions focusing on corneal transplantation are strongly encouraged, including studies on penetrating keratoplasty (PK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and endothelial keratoplasty techniques such as Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). Relevant themes include indications, surgical refinements, donor–recipient factors, graft survival, endothelial cell loss, primary graft failure, rejection, long-term outcomes, and comparative analyses between techniques.

Additional areas of interest include infectious and inflammatory keratitis, corneal dystrophies and degenerations, endothelial disorders, ocular surface disease, postoperative and iatrogenic corneal complications, and novel medical, surgical, and regenerative therapies. Studies integrating advanced diagnostics—such as anterior segment OCT, corneal tomography, confocal microscopy, and emerging biomarkers—with clinical outcomes are particularly welcome.

By highlighting evidence-based advances from diagnosis to treatment, this Special Issue seeks to inform daily clinical decision-making and to outline future directions in the management of corneal disease.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
