Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Acute and chronic liver diseases remain a major and growing global health burden, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality worldwide. The epidemiology of liver disease is rapidly evolving, driven by the rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), alcohol-related liver disease, persistent viral hepatitis in certain regions, and the increasing recognition of immune-mediated and genetic disorders. At the same time, advances in non-invasive diagnostics, including imaging modalities and circulating biomarkers, are transforming how liver diseases are detected and monitored, reducing the reliance on invasive procedures such as biopsy.
Despite these advances, significant challenges remain in early diagnosis, risk stratification, and the effective management of disease progression and complications. The emergence of novel pharmacologic agents, improvements in multidisciplinary care, and the integration of precision medicine approaches offer new opportunities to improve patient outcomes. In this context, there is a critical need to consolidate current knowledge while highlighting innovative research that bridges mechanistic insights with clinical application, making this a timely and highly relevant area for both academic investigation and clinical practice.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic liver disease. We welcome contributions that address clinical, translational, and multidisciplinary aspects of hepatology, including innovations in diagnostic strategies, therapeutic interventions, and patient-centered care.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Clinical intervention to improve liver disease outcomes.
- Advances in non-invasive diagnostics (imaging, elastography, and biomarkers).
- MASLD/MASH: pathogenesis, risk stratification, and emerging therapies.
- Alcohol-related liver disease: mechanisms, early detection, and management.
- Acute liver failure and acute-on-chronic liver failure.
- Cirrhosis and its complications (portal hypertension, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy).
- Hepatocellular carcinoma: surveillance, early detection, and treatment innovations.
- Precision medicine and individualized approaches in hepatology.
- The role of artificial intelligence and digital health in liver disease.
- Liver transplantation: patient selection, outcomes, and innovations.
- The gut–liver axis and microbiome-related therapies.
- Health disparities and global perspectives in liver disease care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
