Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Fibrotic lung disorders are chronic diseases that typically arise from persistent inflammation triggered by infections, endothelial injury, or exposure to harmful substances. The pulmonary extracellular matrix plays a key role in maintaining tissue architecture, and its alterations, due to injury or aging, are closely linked to several chronic lung diseases characterized by remodeling processes.

Crosstalk between alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells is crucial in conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, where fibroblast and myofibroblast activation leads to progressive tissue remodeling. As a consequence of this fibrotic remodeling, surfactant dysfunction and alveolar instability can occur.

Treatment with anti-inflammatory agents has shown promising results by reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory enzymes (COX-2, iNOS, MMP-9) and preventing cell apoptosis and oxidative damage. These effects help limit tissue injury and fibrosis progression, highlighting the therapeutic potential of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant strategies in pulmonary fibrosis. Finally, experimental models remain essential for advancing our understanding and management of lung inflammation.
