Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have evolved into a broad and versatile class of porous materials whose scope now extends well beyond traditional applications such as gas storage and separation. Recent progress has increasingly focused on controlling electronic structure, chemical reactivity, and framework dynamics, enabling MOFs to operate under thermal, chemical, and electrochemical conditions relevant to their functional applications. These advances are expanding the role of MOFs in areas including energy storage and conversion, catalysis, sensing, and environmental technologies.

This Special Issue invites original research articles and critical reviews that address emerging topics in MOF materials chemistry, with an emphasis on structure–property relationships, mechanistic understanding, and materials design strategies. Contributions that advance fundamental insight while demonstrating relevance to functional performance are particularly encouraged. Studies examining framework dynamics, defect chemistry, post-synthetic modification, and stability under operational stress are of special interest. Hybrid systems that integrate MOFs with polymers, covalent organic frameworks, molecular components, or other functional materials are also within scope, particularly where such integration enables new properties or processing routes.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Electrically and ionically active MOFs;
  • Redox-active and mixed-valence frameworks;
  • MOFs for electrochemical energy storage and conversion;
  • Electrocatalysis in MOF-based and MOF-derived materials;
  • Defect engineering and framework dynamics;
  • Post-synthetic modification and transmetalation strategies;
  • Hybrid materials combining MOFs with polymers, COFs, or molecular systems;
  • Stability and performance of MOFs under thermal, chemical, or electrochemical stress.

Through this Special Issue, we aim to highlight current directions in MOF research and to encourage further studies that advance both fundamental understanding and application-relevant performance of MOF-based materials.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
