Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and innovative perspectives on the dynamic and complex processes governing membrane trafficking in cells. Membrane traffic is a fundamental cellular process that ensures the proper distribution of proteins, lipids, and other macromolecules, playing a vital role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, signaling, and overall functionality. Understanding the intricate molecular and cellular mechanisms behind these processes is critical for advancing our knowledge of both normal physiology and a wide array of diseases.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that address diverse aspects of membrane trafficking, with a focus on its regulation, dynamics, and functional implications in both polarized and non-polarized cells and in health and disease.
Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms: Studies exploring the molecular machinery of vesicle formation, cargo sorting, trafficking pathways, and membrane fusion events. Insights into the role of specific proteins, such as SNAREs, Rab GTPases, tethering factors, and coat proteins, are highly encouraged.
-Polarized vs. Non-Polarized Cells: Investigations into the specialized trafficking mechanisms in polarized cells (e.g., epithelial cells, neurons) versus non-polarized cells, highlighting the unique challenges and solutions employed by different cell types.
-Crosstalk Between Signal Transduction and Lipid Physiology: Articles that delve into the interplay between signaling pathways and lipid metabolism and their roles in regulating membrane trafficking and organelle function.
Technological Innovations: Contributions featuring novel methodologies that push the boundaries of membrane trafficking research. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
-Super-resolution microscopy techniques (e.g., STED, SIM, PALM/STORM) for visualizing trafficking events at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions.
- Molecular sensors and probes for studying dynamic processes in living cells.
- Advanced proteomics approaches, including interactomics, proximity labeling techniques (e.g., BioID, APEX), and mass spectrometry, for uncovering protein networks and interactions involved in membrane trafficking.
Disease Connections: Research linking dysregulation of membrane trafficking to human diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and metabolic syndromes. Mechanistic insights into how trafficking defects contribute to disease pathology are particularly welcome.
This Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive platform for advancing our understanding of membrane trafficking and its broader implications in cell biology and disease. By fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue and showcasing state-of-the-art techniques, we aim to highlight the exciting progress and future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
