Dear Colleagues,
Plant essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile secondary metabolites, primarily composed of terpenoids and phenylpropanoids, which play crucial roles in plant defense, communication, and adaptation to environmental stress. The biosynthesis of these compounds is mainly governed by the mevalonate (MVA) and methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathways, leading to a remarkable structural diversity with significant biological implications. Recent advances in metabolomics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics have enabled deeper insights into the enzymatic routes and regulatory networks underlying essential oil production. Moreover, increasing attention has been directed toward elucidating the mechanisms of essential oil biological activity, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects. These activities are often associated with synergistic interactions among constituents and their ability to modulate key molecular targets and signaling pathways. Understanding both biosynthetic pathways and activity mechanisms is fundamental for the rational development of essential oil-based applications in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food preservation.
