Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As we know, malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumor with an extremely poor prognosis, because its own nature is one of the most difficult to treat. However, despite multimodal therapy being able to help in disease management, at present, it has not been possible to establish for MPM. As such, MPM continues to be a challenge for oncology, for both medical doctors and investigators.

New genetic, biological, and analytical technologies have led to the identification of specific molecular alterations that drive cancer pathogenesis. Consequently, it is now possible to design drugs and biological products that interact with these molecular alterations, modulate their activity, and elicit a measurable effect on a specific disease process in both in vivo and in vitro settings.

Some of these products, such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, have been demonstrated to improve the survival of molecularly selected groups of patients across a wide range of tumor histologies, dramatically transforming clinical practice guidelines over a very short period of time.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue. The aim is to provide an overview of the evolving therapeutic landscape for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), with particular attention to new clinically effective tumor biomarkers, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and the development and use of in vitro and in vivo models for their analysis; intercellular biochemistry; and the use of AI in global MPM research. All these areas of interest align with the interests and guidelines of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

As such, we think this Special Issue could serve as a valuable resource for research scientists, clinical scientists, and healthcare professionals in oncology, who wish to stay up to date on the latest clinical trials and likely upcoming therapy trends in the field of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Since IJMS is a journal of molecular science, pure clinical studies will not be suitable for our journal. But clinical submissions with biomolecular experiments are welcomed. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • New molecules for treatment of natural or synthetic origin;
  • Applications of AI to the design or identification of biomarkers;
  • Biological markers of clinical application;
  • Methylation analysis from cell line studies or patients’ samples;
  • lncRNAs and/or siRNAs and/or miRNAs analysis;
  • Molecular mechanisms and sensitization in MPM;
  • The state of the art in malignant pleural mesothelioma treatment management;
  • Organoids or 3D models for precision medicine studies.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
