Dear Colleagues,
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have transformed our understanding of immune tolerance since their identification at the end of the 20th century. Pioneering research revealing the essential role of the FOXP3 gene in Treg development and function opened the door to a new field of investigation, later recognized with a Nobel Prize. Tregs act as a natural brake on the immune system, preventing excessive responses and protecting the body from autoimmune diseases.
In recent years, biotechnological advances have enabled the development of therapies based on the expansion, engineering, and transfer of Tregs to treat conditions such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and transplant rejection. Their therapeutic potential also extends to regenerative medicine and emerging cell-based strategies. From basic immunology to clinical trials, Tregs represent a bridge between fundamental discoveries and innovative treatments that promise to redefine modern immunotherapy and restore immune balance in patients.
