Dear Colleagues,
Small-molecule fluorescent probes have become indispensable tools for visualizing and interrogating biological processes with high spatial–temporal resolution. Their structural tunability, fast response kinetics, and compatibility with live-cell and in vivo environments enable precise monitoring of microenvironmental cues, dynamic organelle functions, and disease-related biomarkers. In recent years, advances in molecular design—including environment-responsive scaffolds, activatable mechanisms, and targeted or self-validating architectures—have significantly expanded the functional landscape of these probes. Meanwhile, the rapid development of cutting-edge imaging technologies, such as super-resolution microscopy, multiplexed imaging, and fluorescence lifetime imaging, has greatly strengthened the ability of small-molecule probes to reveal dynamic biological events and disease mechanisms with higher precision and clarity. These technological and chemical advances together drive the demand for next-generation probes with improved photophysical performance, enhanced biostability, and refined functional specificity.
This Special Issue, “Small-Molecule Fluorescent Probes: From Design to Biological Applications,” aims to highlight recent progress in probe chemistry, structure–function relationships, imaging mechanisms, and practical applications in biology. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that report innovative molecular design strategies, advanced imaging modalities, and biological discoveries enabled by fluorescent probes. We intend for this Special Issue to serve as an inspiring platform to accelerate the development of next-generation fluorescent tools for fundamental research and biomedical innovation.
