Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Long COVID is a lingering, incompletely understood, multisystem condition that affects not only the lungs, but many other organs and bodily functions. The prevalence of long COVID varies among the regions of the world, but the global prevalence is estimated at 36% among individuals with a history of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. More consistent are the core manifestations of long COVID, e.g., respiratory symptoms and general fatigue in 20% and psychological and neurological impairment in 18–16% of patients. It is also puzzling that the prevalence of long COVID is almost twice as high in hospitalized patients vs. those who had only ambulatory or home care.
Accordingly, some five years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the goal of this Special Issue is not only to update current evidence on the prevalence and clinical manifestations of long COVID but above all to advance mechanistic understanding at the molecular and cellular level—including cytokine dysregulation, aberrant gene activation and putative pro-oncogenic tissue changes, which we highlight as a hypothesis-generating area warranting rigorous investigation.
In this Special Issue, original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, and mechanistic or translational studies are welcome.
