Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The identification of new biomolecules—such as engineered proteins, nucleic acids, and aptamers—is the driving force of biosensor innovation.

These molecules act as recognition elements that define biosensor specificity, sensitivity, and robustness, making their rational design a key challenge in molecular science.

This Special Issue focuses on the identification and use of novel molecules to design biosensors capable of revolutionizing molecular diagnostics and environmental monitoring. The development of innovative recognition elements is essential to overcome limitations regarding sensitivity, selectivity, and stability.

In contrast to broadly defined biosensor research, this Special Issue will be devoted to elucidation of the molecular-level mechanisms of biosensor-target analyte interactions, design strategies, and functional properties that enable improved recognition of each other.

We are interested in contributions that explore:

  • The design, selection, and engineering of new biomolecules as recognition elements;
  • Structure–function relationships governing the molecular recognition elements;
  • Strategies to enhance binding specificity affinity and activity of the recognition elements;
  • Stability of the recognition elements under operational conditions;
  • Integration of novel recognition elements onto functionalized surfaces;
  • Advanced biochemical and biophysical methodologies for design of innovate biosensors.

Applications may include (but are not limited to) molecular diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety, provided that the primary focus remains on innovation in molecular recognition elements.
