Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Raw wood is one of the most important forestry products. Assumptions about a gradual decline in the use of wood from the last century have not been fulfilled, but on the contrary, the position of raw wood and wood products is constantly strengthening. In 1900, about 1,800 methods of various uses of wood for final products or raw materials for other processing industries were known. In 1920, 2,200 methods of using raw wood were mentioned, in 1950 about 5,000 and in 1970, up to 18,000 methods of using raw wood and wood products were recorded. The possibilities of wood recovery and utilization continue to expand.

With the development of the possibilities of utilization and processing of wood, the position of the forestry and wood processing complex is strengthening. New possibilities for qualitative evaluation of wood and wood products have experienced dynamic development in the last decade, along with the development of information technologies.

The aim and focus of the special issue is to bring new knowledge from these areas. It focuses mainly on the qualitative evaluation of wood and wood products, research of new wood products with significant potential for the forestry and wood processing complex, research of quality properties of raw or specially treated wood and wood products.

Acknowledging an undeniable need for innovation, this paper offers a qualitative assessment for recognition and policy advocacy for superior innovations—for new wood products and processes offering more benefits and fewer drawbacks than other innovations. The paper highlights the irrationality of using the limited natural and human-made goods of the world to produce and consume inferior innovations, especially when they fail to mitigate or, in fact, contribute to worsening climate change. Raymond Williams’ “structures of feeling” are used to disclose evaluative commitments associated with the “new” characteristic of industrialized and indigenous civilizations toward illuminating potential pathways for halting an otherwise seemingly unstoppable engine of climate change from pushing all of life on Earth over its precipice. Discussing how the “new” is always implicated in the “old,” decision-making and design methods applicable over the whole of the value chain are proposed for generating “new” innovations and processes that are genuinely able to change the current world trajectory of our species. The growing awareness of nature conservation encourages producers, engineers, and designers to contribute to the rational and innovative use of raw materials. Sustainable development is imperative, symbolizing the balance between meeting the needs of the present generations without compromising the needs of future ones. The aim of this paper is to investigate the production process of cut veneer of Pedunculate Slavonian oak (Quercus robur L.) and which parts of the logs are lost or thrown in the production of cut veneer, to analyze the increase in the use of veneers that currently represent residue in processing, and to propose directions of designing a new product from the analyzed residue—decorative wall panels. The research was conducted in the company Spačva Ltd. in Vinkovci, Vukovar-Srijem County, Croatia, in 2021/2022. The findings emphasize that the vast majority of unused veneers, considered technologically unacceptable in the production process, can be decoratively and visually desirable due to their natural appearance in the design of a new product. By analyzing and applying the design principles and elements, natural phenomena were applied to the veneers that represent the basic motif of the new decorative wall panels. The initial solutions of the decorative wall coverings made of veneer with a natural appearance and the solution from other wood residues from production are shown. The results of this study have potentially far-reaching implications for wood product manufacturers and demonstrate the importance of applying design in wood technology to reduce residue, demonstrating that residue from standard production can be designed into an innovative, sustainable product that reduces environmental damage. Chairs are furniture that are intended for direct contact with people, they are heavily loaded by forces, and they must meet a number of criteria, such as ergonomics, safety, economic sustainability, feasibility, and aesthetic requirements. This study aimed to define the dimensional solution of wooden chairs for the adult bariatric subpopulation of Slovakia. Long-term observations of the changes in the anthropometric dimensions of the population (secular trend) allowed the determination of the body height of 95% of the adult male population. Based on the analysis of the bariatric population of Slovakia, regardless of gender, the values of weight, waist and hip circumference, and seat width were defined in the years 2020 to 2022. The increased population’s average body mass makes the researched topic highly relevant and necessary. Based on the obtained data, new dimensions of wooden chairs for bariatric respondents were designed: seat height 49 cm, seat width 67 cm, and seat depth 47 cm. Adjusting the dimensions of wooden chairs makes it possible to ensure comfortable sitting and standing for bariatric respondents and prevents many health problems. For furniture manufacturers, the introduction of the production of wooden furniture for bariatric respondents can be a competitive market advantage. Full article

Every space used by a person should suit the anthropometric and biomechanical characteristics of the users. Poorly designed premises and types of equipment have a negative impact on human health. Furniture, as a device for daily use, can in the long term, with inadequate dimensions, significantly affect human health. In this work, we define the secular development of selected anthropometric dimensions of the Slovak population. Based on the positive development, we point out the dimensional and strength characteristics of bed and resting furniture and the dimensional and strength characteristics of seating furniture, which anthropometric dimensions influence. At the same time, we note the need to update the calculation formulas for pricing individual products, which will have an economic impact on wood furniture production. Based on the results, we can conclude that in most of the monitored characteristics of the Slovak population, such as height and bodyweight, the elbow height when sitting, palm width, hand length, length of the forearm to fingertip, buttock–knee length and knee height—sitting with shoes, affect the dimensions of the bed and seating furniture. This implies the need to update the current standards for the general Slovak population. Full article

Successful new product development (NPD) is critical for modern outdoor wooden furnishing (OWF) manufacturing companies to achieve competitive success, since current users have the serious requirements of aesthetics, materials and environmental quality. Identifying the competitive performance of a product in development is an effective means to minimize the risk of failure. However, the literature reviews of the comprehensive evaluation (CE) model for OWF NPD are very rare. In this study, the CE method that applies three steps, which include constructing evaluation criteria, establishing a trapezoidal fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and proposing a CE model is applied to assess the performance of a product in development and to minimize the risk of product failure in the market. The study aims to propose a CE approach for OWF NDP, which utilizes multiple methods that incorporate a literature review, questionnaire, Delphi method and fuzzy trapezoidal AHP. Finally, an integrated CE model is proposed to measure the competitive performance of NPD. A case study of a series of OWF in Harbin Pingfang Park, China is presented to illustrate the feasibility of the model. The result demonstrates that the proposed method predicts the performance of a product in development objectively and comprehensively. This evaluation method, being an assessment tool, can help designers and decision makers make better decisions and will predict the competitive performance of a product so as to reduce the risk of economic losses, not merely depending on previous experience and personal expectation. The first goal of this paper is to verify the accuracy of four calculation methods of log volume. The tool to achieve this goal is to compare the results of the calculation of the log volume with the real log volume obtained from the three-dimensional reconstruction obtained by computed tomography. The second goal of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of displaying the qualitative features of wood in three-dimensional models of selected pieces of logs of oak, beech, and spruce, which were obtained using computed tomography. It is possible to state that each of the tested calculation methods of wood log volume are applicable in practice. The tested methods achieve excellent accuracy in determining the volume of spruce logs with a small variance of values, and conversely, in the case of beech wood, the tested methods are the most inaccurate with the largest variance of values. When determining the volume of wood logs, we recommend using the calculation method STN 48 0009, because it achieves the best results. Qualitative analysis based on CT scans of internal features can be described as a completely new level of approach to the evaluation of log quality. The performed analysis showed great potential for automatic detection of internal qualitative features in the tested spruce log. In this wood, wood defects are distinguishable by computed tomography. In the case of deciduous oak and beech, the situation is more complicated. The internal structure of these trees overlaps the internal qualitative features of the wood. To accurately detect internal errors in these trees, it will be necessary to perform many comparative tests to achieve optimal results. Full article
