Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Tropical forest restoration has become a global priority in response to deforestation, climate change, biodiversity loss, and the degradation of ecosystem functions and services. Across tropical regions, increasing investments in ecological restoration have stimulated substantial advances in the planning, spatial prioritization, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of restoration initiatives. Emerging technologies including remote sensing, geographic information systems, spatial modeling, LiDAR, unmanned aerial vehicles, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and integrated forest inventories are creating new opportunities to identify priority areas, assess restoration potential, monitor forest structure and canopy development, evaluate natural regeneration, map recovery trajectories, and support decision-making across spatial and temporal scales. Nevertheless, major challenges remain in integrating field observations with remotely sensed data, defining reliable and scalable indicators, accounting for ecological and socioeconomic differences among tropical landscapes, evaluating restoration outcomes over time, and translating scientific advances into operational protocols and decision-support tools. This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, case studies, and perspectives addressing innovative approaches to the planning, prioritization, monitoring, and evaluation of tropical forest restoration. Contributions from diverse tropical regions and forest contexts are encouraged, particularly studies that integrate multiple data sources, assess restoration effectiveness, advance methodological frameworks, or support evidence-based policies and management strategies.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
