Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Forest ecosystems play a key role in maintaining atmospheric balance and improving air quality by storing carbon, pollutants retention and influencing climate processes. At the same time, they are increasingly exposed to the effects of air pollution, climate variability and extreme events, factors that can affect vegetation health, the adaptive capacity of ecosystems and complex relationships between vegetation and the atmosphere. Recent developments in environmental monitoring, remote sensing, atmospheric modelling and ecological assessment have contributed significantly to the understanding of the complex interactions between forest vegetation and atmospheric processes. However, aspects related to the natural effects of air pollution on forests, emissions from vegetation, the role of urban and peri-urban forests in improving air quality and vegetation–atmosphere interactions in the context of climate change require further investigation.

This Special Issue aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for the publication of original articles and reviews dedicated to the role of forest ecosystems in atmospheric dynamics and in improving air quality, as well as the effects of atmospheric factors on forest vegetation.

Current research trends target the exchange processes between forests and the atmosphere, the effects of air pollution and climate stress on forest vegetation, carbon and gas exchanges at the ecosystem level, atmospheric deposition, the role of urban and peri-urban forests, applications of remote sensing and modern environmental monitoring technologies, as well as the contribution of forest ecosystems to climate change adaptation and air quality improvement.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, review papers, case studies, and methodological contributions related to forest ecosystems, atmospheric interactions, and air quality. Topics may include the effects of air pollution on forests, forest ecosystem services, biomonitoring, urban forestry, remote sensing applications, ecosystem management, and sustainable environmental strategies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
