Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Currently, there is great concern for the sustainability of aquaculture and the welfare of the animals being farmed. The production of feed, where fish meal and oils play a significant role, must be modified so that the proportion of these two ingredients is reduced to relieve pressure on the fishing grounds from which they are obtained. This entails finding new sources of protein and fatty acids that can meet the nutritional needs of animals. Currently, the use of plant derivatives, seeds, food industry by-products, algae, etc., is being studied. However, these new diets need to be improved to achieve the same production yields as the diets currently in use. For this reason, it is imperative to have a thorough understanding of the nutrition and metabolism of aquatic animals in order to apply it to the formulation of these new diets. This Special Issue will contribute to increasing the knowledge of fish nutrition and metabolism, for its application in formulating new, more sustainable and environmentally friendly diets, without compromising the animals' productive performance and health. I am pleased to invite you to contribute to the Special Issue “New Ingredients for Fish Feed: Implications for Their Nutrition and Metabolism” of the journal Fishes.
