Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing penetration of wind and solar generation is creating more varied flexibility needs in power systems. Advanced energy storage systems, including electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, and hybrid technologies, can help balance energy across timescales and support reliable, low-carbon operation. Their contribution depends on more than the performance of individual devices. Accurate models, suitable operating modes, efficient energy conversion, coordinated control, and sound investment decisions are needed to realize their value in different grid and user-side applications. Important research challenges remain. Storage technologies differ in response speed, duration, efficiency, degradation, site requirements, and cost. These differences complicate technology selection, capacity allocation, and coordination with renewable generation and other flexible resources. Planning models must also account for uncertain supply and demand, while operating strategies should connect short-term control with long-term economic and environmental outcomes.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews addressing the modelling, evaluation, planning, control, and operation of advanced energy storage systems. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Storage system modelling and experimental validation;
  • Operating-mode design and analysis;
  • Energy efficiency improvement;
  • Performance and reliability assessment;
  • Storage sizing and siting;
  • Economic planning under uncertainty;
  • Flexible control and optimal scheduling;
  • Coordination with demand response and flexible generation;
  • Renewable energy integration and grid services;
  • Life-cycle cost and carbon assessment.

We particularly encourage studies that link storage technology characteristics to practical power-system needs, compare solutions using transparent assumptions, and validate proposed methods through experiments or realistic case studies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
