Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition toward decentralized, resilient and low-carbon energy infrastructures requires moving beyond standalone renewable energy installations toward deeply integrated, multi-source systems. Hybrid and polygeneration configurations—combining solar (PV/PVT), wind, biomass and heat pump technologies—offer significant potential to overcome resource intermittency, enhance energy self-sufficiency and provide simultaneous electricity, heating and cooling. However, their optimal design, dynamic operational control and techno-economic feasibility present complex engineering and scientific challenges.

Following the success of the first edition, this second edition of the Special Issue aims to provide a dedicated platform for cutting-edge scientific developments in decentralized renewable energy systems, hybrid polygeneration and microgrids. We particularly welcome contributions focusing on dynamic performance simulation, novel system architectures, experimental prototype validation, advanced energy storage integration and multi-criteria optimization.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Hybrid and polygeneration renewable systems (integrating PV/PVT, small/building-integrated wind turbines, biomass/gasification and geothermal/heat pump units);
  • Microgrid design and operation (both grid-connected and off-grid/islanded microgrids for residential, commercial or isolated communities);
  • Energy storage integration and management (battery storage, hydrogen energy storage, thermal energy storage, CAES and hybrid storage systems);
  • Dynamic numerical modeling and system simulation (e.g., TRNSYS, transient thermodynamic analysis and computational tool development);
  • Techno-economic and environmental assessment (levelized cost of energy, exergy analysis, life cycle assessment and sensitivity studies of distributed energy systems);
  • Control, dispatch strategies and multi-objective optimization for mitigating renewable intermittency and maximizing self-consumption;
  • Experimental investigations, lab-scale prototypes and real-world case studies of small-scale cogeneration/polygeneration systems.

Both original research articles and comprehensive review papers are warmly invited.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
