Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The global transition toward sustainable energy systems is rapidly transforming the structure and operation of modern power networks. The increasing penetration of renewable energy resources, distributed generation, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and smart grid technologies introduces significant opportunities as well as operational challenges related to stability, reliability, resilience, and energy management. In parallel, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data-driven technologies enables smarter, more adaptive, and autonomous power system operation and control.

Modern societies require intelligent power systems capable of withstanding natural disasters, cyber-physical disturbances, fluctuating renewable generation, and rapidly changing load demands, while also ensuring secure, efficient, and sustainable energy delivery. AI-based techniques increasingly play a critical role in forecasting, optimization, predictive maintenance, fault diagnosis, energy management, and resilient system restoration.

This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and industry experts working on innovative methodologies, analytical frameworks, optimization techniques, and intelligent control strategies for next-generation power systems. This Issue will focus on emerging technologies and interdisciplinary approaches that enhance sustainability, intelligence, flexibility, resilience, and operational efficiency in modern electrical networks.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Artificial Intelligence and machine learning applications in power systems;
  • Renewable energy integration and management;
  • Smart grids and intelligent energy systems;
  • Microgrid design, operation, and resilience;
  • AI-driven energy management and optimization;
  • Energy storage sizing and intelligent control strategies;
  • Resilient and self-healing power systems;
  • Deep learning for power system forecasting and fault diagnosis;
  • Demand response and controllable loads;
  • Electric vehicle integration and smart charging infrastructure;
  • Digital twins and data-driven power system analysis;
  • Edge computing, IoT, and intelligent monitoring in energy systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
