Dear Colleagues,
The transition toward sustainable energy systems and circular resource management has intensified global interest in converting waste streams into renewable energy carriers. Waste-to-bioenergy technologies offer a promising pathway to simultaneously address two pressing challenges: waste management and sustainable energy production. Organic wastes originating from municipal, agricultural, forestry, and industrial activities represent abundant and underutilized resources that can be transformed into valuable bioenergy products such as biogas, bio-oil, syngas, and biofuels.
Recent advances in thermochemical, biochemical, and hybrid conversion technologies have significantly improved the efficiency and viability of waste-to-bioenergy processes. In addition, emerging digital tools, including machine learning, advanced modelling, and process optimization, are enabling improved system performance and resource recovery. However, further research is required to evaluate process performance, environmental sustainability, techno-economic feasibility, and system integration within broader circular economy frameworks.
This Special Issue aims to showcase recent developments in waste-to-bioenergy processes and their environmental, technical, and economic assessment. Contributions addressing innovative conversion technologies, process optimization, feedstock valorisation, life cycle and techno-economic assessment, and real-world implementation are particularly encouraged.
This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, and case studies related to waste-to-bioenergy systems. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
