Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition towards sustainable and intelligent energy systems is one of the most significant challenges and opportunities of our time. The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, the electrification of transport, and the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) are transforming traditional power systems into complex, dynamic, and data-rich networks. This evolution calls for advanced strategies for Smart Energy Management that can ensure optimal operation, reliability, and resilience across all levels—from generation and storage to transmission, distribution, and end-use.

Recent advancements in digitalization, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G-enabled communications have opened new frontiers for monitoring, control, and optimization of energy systems. These technologies enable real-time decision-making, predictive maintenance, and flexible demand response, contributing to the efficient integration of renewable sources and the decarbonization of the energy sector. However, challenges such as data security, interoperability, and scalability still require innovative research and coordinated efforts from academia and industry.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the latest research findings, theoretical developments, and practical implementations related to Smart Energy Management in Power Systems. It welcomes original research papers, review articles, and case studies focusing on intelligent control, optimization, and digital transformation of modern energy networks.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in energy management;
  • Smart grids, microgrids, and virtual power plants;
  • Demand-side management and energy flexibility;
  • Energy storage integration and optimization;
  • Data-driven forecasting and predictive analytics;
  • Real-time monitoring, control, and cyber-physical system security;
  • 5G-enabled communication platforms for power systems;
  • Digital twins and simulation frameworks;
  • Optimal power flow and multi-objective optimization;
  • Policy, regulatory, and techno-economic aspects of smart energy systems.

We look forward to your valuable contributions that will shape the future of intelligent, sustainable, and resilient power systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
