Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The accelerating global transition towards low-carbon energy systems has positioned distributed power resources (DERs)—including renewable generation, energy storage, and flexible loads—as pivotal elements of modern power grids. However, the deepening integration of these resources introduces significant operational complexity within electricity markets. The inherent variability and uncertainty of DERs challenge traditional centralized dispatch mechanisms, necessitating a paradigm shift towards market-driven operation and decentralized control strategies. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches that harmonize technical reliability with economic efficiency, such as transactive energy frameworks, virtual power plants (VPPs), and advanced demand-side management.
This Special Issue aims to provide a premier forum for disseminating cutting-edge research on the operation, control, and market integration of distributed power resources. We invite original contributions that explore theoretical advancements, practical implementations, and interdisciplinary solutions bridging power engineering and economics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Modeling and Analysis: Dynamic modeling and stability analysis of aggregated distributed resources;
- Market Mechanism Design: Design of local energy markets, peer-to-peer (P2P) trading platforms, and ancillary service markets for DERs;
- Prosumer Behavior and Strategy: Strategic bidding and decision-making models for prosumers in distributed electricity markets;
- Transactive Energy Systems: Development and validation of distributed trading algorithms and blockchain applications;
- Optimal Operation and Control: Real-time optimization, hierarchical control architectures, and resilience enhancement for DER-dominated grids;
- Demand Response (DR): Design of incentive-based and price-based DR programs; implementation strategies and impact assessment of DR resources;
- Virtual Power Plants (VPPs): Planning, coordinated control, and multi-market bidding strategies for VPPs integrating heterogeneous resources;
- Resource Aggregation: Advanced aggregation technologies for small-scale DERs; capacity allocation and optimal scheduling for microgrids;
- Load Aggregator Strategies: Trading strategies, risk management, and portfolio optimization for load aggregators in wholesale and retail markets;
- AI and Data Analytics: Application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics for forecasting, operation, and control of distributed resources;
- Performance Evaluation: Assessment of the efficiency, reliability, and cybersecurity of DER operation under various market environments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
