Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have emerged as a transformative technology for next-generation wireless communication systems, offering unprecedented capabilities to manipulate electromagnetic wave propagation, enhance spectral efficiency, and extend communication coverage. By dynamically adjusting the phase, amplitude, and frequency response of passive or semi-passive elements, RIS can intelligently tailor the wireless channel, paving the way for high-performance, energy-efficient, and cost-effective communication and sensing solutions. With the rapid evolution of mobile communication towards dynamic and complex scenarios, e.g., high-speed mobility, dense urban environments, and ultra-reliable low-latency communication, the design and optimization of RIS-integrated systems face new challenges and opportunities, particularly in synergy with advanced antenna technologies and efficient signal processing algorithms.
This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research advances in the field of RIS for advanced antenna systems and communication performance optimization. We welcome high-quality original research papers that address the key challenges and innovations in RIS-related technologies, with a focus on communication performance optimization, dynamic scenario adaptation, integration with advanced antenna technologies, and reliable channel estimation. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to exchange ideas, share the latest findings, and shape the future development of RIS-enabled wireless communication and sensing systems.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Communication performance optimization design for RIS-aided wireless systems, e.g., spectral efficiency maximization, energy efficiency optimization, and latency minimization.
- RIS parameter design and adaptation strategies in dynamic scenarios, e.g., high-speed mobility, time-varying channels, and dynamic user distribution.
- Integration of RIS with fluid antenna systems: architecture design, performance analysis, and joint optimization.
- Efficient channel estimation techniques for RIS-aided communication systems, e.g., pilot design, blind estimation, and machine learning-based methods.
- RIS-enabled joint communication and sensing: signal processing algorithms, performance trade-offs, and application scenarios.
- Performance analysis and validation of RIS-integrated systems in realistic dynamic environments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
