Innovating and Integrating Conservation Tools to Address the Global Extinction Crisis and Prevent Ecosystem Collapse
This special issue belongs to the section “Biodiversity Conservation“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Global extinction risks are dramatically increasing as planetary boundaries are crossed. New information on underrepresented taxa (e.g., insects) is improving monitoring methods but also necessitates urgent action to minimize catastrophic harm, avoid the collapse of entire ecosystems, and prevent the loss of biodiversity, on which the world depends. This Special Issue is inspired by the broad work of the Species Survival Commission as we transition to the 2026–2030 quadrennium and aim to contribute to progress in achieving priorities of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We invite researchers working directly or indirectly with the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and/or Ecosystems—species/ecosystem assessments, conservation research, priority setting, and action, taxonomic challenges, emerging technologies, conservation funding, among others—to submit an article to this Special Issue. We particularly welcome innovative approaches to strengthening Red List processes and functions, linkages to other global platforms and initiatives (e.g., Key Biodiversity Areas, Convention on the International Trade of Threatened and Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), Green Listing, Green Status of Species, Ramsar Convention on Wetlands), resolving challenges to changes in taxonomy, and ultimately the use of the Red List to advance conservation. We strive to achieve taxonomic representation in the collection of articles (animals, fungi and plants) with papers from around the world and encourage diverse authorship (geography, age, gender, and expertise of participants) where possible.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diversity is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
