Dear Colleagues,
Forests are among the most biologically diverse and ecologically important terrestrial ecosystems, providing essential habitats for a wide range of organisms and supporting critical ecosystem functions and services. However, forest ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, land-use change, disturbances, invasive species, and growing anthropogenic pressures. Understanding how these drivers influence forest biodiversity, ecosystem structure and functioning, and ecological resilience is therefore essential for developing effective conservation and sustainable management strategies.
This Special Issue, “Forest Ecology and Biodiversity: Conservation, Ecosystem Dynamics and Sustainable Management” aims to bring together recent advances in forest ecology, biodiversity research, conservation, and sustainable forest management. Particular attention will be given to studies examining the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem processes across different spatial and temporal scales, as well as the responses of forest ecosystems to natural and anthropogenic disturbances and environmental change.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and interdisciplinary studies addressing the diversity, structure, dynamics, conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forest ecosystems. Contributions may focus on plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms, or their ecological interactions, as well as on forest communities and landscapes. Studies integrating field observations, long-term monitoring, experimental approaches, remote sensing, spatial analysis, ecological modelling, and molecular or other innovative methods are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Forest biodiversity patterns and their ecological drivers;
- Forest community structure, composition, succession, and ecosystem dynamics;
- Biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships;
- Effects of climate change and extreme climatic events on forest ecosystems;
- Natural and anthropogenic disturbances, including fire, drought, storms, pests, and land-use change;
- Habitat loss, fragmentation, connectivity, and landscape ecology;
- Conservation of forest species, habitats, and genetic resources;
- Forest restoration, ecological resilience, and ecosystem recovery;
- Sustainable forest management and biodiversity-friendly silvicultural practices;
- Monitoring and assessment of forest biodiversity using field-based and emerging technologies;
- Ecosystem services and nature-based approaches to forest conservation and management.
Through contributions from different forest types, geographic regions, and methodological perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to improve our understanding of the processes shaping forest biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics and to provide scientifically grounded knowledge for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable forest management under rapidly changing environmental conditions.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
