Soil Microbial Responses to Disturbance: Ecological and Evolutionary Perspectives

Dear Colleagues,

Disturbance is a fundamental driver shaping soil microbial communities and the ecosystems they sustain. Fire, land-use change, pollution and climate warming continually reshape the structure, function and evolutionary trajectories of soil microbiomes, generating cascading effects on their communities. Understanding how microbial communities respond, recover and adapt to these pressures is essential for predicting ecosystem resilience under global change.

This Special Issue invites studies on the ecological and evolutionary dimensions of soil microbial responses to disturbance across biomes and timescales. We welcome experimental, observational, theoretical and synthesis contributions—particularly when they integrate omics tools to uncover mechanisms of adaptation, resilience, biogeochemical functioning and community assembly. Cross-system comparisons, long-term datasets and mechanistic frameworks are especially encouraged. By bringing together diverse approaches, we aim to advance an integrative understanding of how soil microbes mediate ecosystem stability and recovery.
