Dear Colleagues,
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are characterized by progressive damage and dysfunction in neuronal cells and the deterioration of neuronal tissues. Despite exhibiting diverse clinical symptoms, these diseases share many common pathological features. ND pathogenesis involves protein misfolding and aggregation within specific brain regions, which trigger neuroinflammation and oxidative stress at sites of injury and nearby areas, subsequently leading to the degeneration of neural tissues. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the initial protein misfolding and the change from functional protein to pathologic aggregate have been a major subject of research in recent years. NDs are classified according to clinical symptoms and the major component(s) of protein deposits found in affected brain regions. The main culprits in Alzheimer’s disease are Abeta peptides of 40 and 42 amino acid residues long; in Parkinson’s disease, it is alpha-synuclein; and in Huntington’s disease, it is huntingtin. Amyloid accumulation and neuroinflammation take place long before the first clinical symptoms become evident. This is why it is so important to diagnose the disease as early as possible in order to administer preventative or symptomatic treatment. Recent progress in biomarker identification has been remarkable due to the development of super-sensitive antibody-based techniques and mass spectrometry, which can be used to determine nanogram and picogram quantities in cerebrospinal fluid and blood sera.
For this Special Issue, we welcome diverse research and review articles addressing the rapidly growing field of biomarkers and biodiagnostics in neurodegenerative diseases.
