Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to invite you to submit a manuscript to the forthcoming Special Issue, “Laser in Periodontics” in the Dentistry Journal. Given the development of knowledge and progress of contemporary dentistry, it is becoming increasingly evident that periodontology has become of sine-qua-non importance within the medical field. There is no doubt that the wellbeing of a periodontal patient is associated with a holistic approach to the medical problem and the search for cause-and-effect relationships that go beyond the classic and obvious views of the discipline. As an inflammatory disease, periodontal diseases are associated with a commensal dental biofilm, including pathogenic bacteria and viruses, but one should be mindful about other factors conducive to the emergence and development of the disease, particularly that related to the host immunological response. The frequent occurrence of periodontal diseases at various stages of advancement indicates that periodontitis is currently one of the most common civilizational diseases, influencing not only the individual patient, but the entire population.

Reduction or alteration of subgingival biofilm environment, one of the main local factors causing periodontal disease, is still a challenge, but also a rich field of exploration for effective, safe, and best value-to-cost methods. In many years of searching for such methods, our focus is on incorporating laser technology as adjunctive therapy to the treatment of periodontal diseases is growing. Due to its bactericidal, disinfecting, and regenerating effects, laser in dentistry is not only an innovative tool, but it also has the potential to become the new golden standard of modern periodontal treatment.

The detoxifying, disinfecting, and antibacterial effects of laser therapy could in many cases reduce the use of adjunct antibiotic therapy in selected cases. In so doing, dentists and periodontists can contribute to the overall improvement of public health. Finally, the laser is also a useful and effective tool not only in surgical and nonsurgical periodontal treatment but also in aesthetic periodontal procedures, such as crown lengthening, gingivectomy, frenectomy, and gingival depigmentation.

Possible topics for this Special Issue include but are not limited to the following:

  • Laser in nonsurgical periodontal treatment;
  • Laser in surgical periodontal treatment;
  • Periodontal pocket therapy;
  • Peri-implantitis and mucositis therapy;
  • Peri-implant surgery;
  • Antimicrobial photoactive disinfections therapy;
  • Photobiomodulation and periodontal regeneration;
  • Stem cells and photobiomodulation;
  • Periodontal wound healing therapy;
  • Aesthetic procedures in periodontal surgery;
  • Prevention and treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity;
  • Systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

The editorial board invites authors to submit manuscripts with a current interest in basic or clinical contents.
