Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Skin aging is a complex and multifactorial biological process resulting from the interaction between intrinsic biological mechanisms and lifelong environmental exposures. Advances in skin biology have demonstrated that interconnected processes, including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, chronic low-grade inflammation, glycation, cellular senescence, epigenetic alterations, extracellular matrix remodeling, and progressive impairment of tissue homeostasis, drive skin aging. In addition, the skin exposome, including ultraviolet radiation, pollution, nutrition, lifestyle factors, and environmental stressors, plays a critical role in shaping the aging phenotype. Understanding these mechanisms requires integrated scientific approaches that link molecular and cellular events to tissue-level alterations, clinical manifestations, and measurable biological outcomes.

We are pleased to invite researchers, clinicians, and industry scientists to contribute to this Special Issue, "Advances and Integrated Strategies in Healthy Skin Aging". This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for disseminating innovative research that advances our understanding of the biology of skin aging and supports the development of evidence-based strategies to promote skin health and healthy aging. Particular emphasis will be placed on translational approaches that integrate mechanistic insights, advanced human-relevant experimental models, biomarkers, omics technologies, and clinical investigation to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cosmetic ingredients, raw materials, formulations, and interventions.

Original research articles, reviews, communications, and perspectives are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Molecular and cellular mechanisms of skin aging;
  • Hallmarks of aging, longevity science, and skin biology;
  • Skin biomarkers and aging-related biological pathways;
  • Omics technologies, systems biology, and integrative data analysis;
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction, bioenergetics, and metabolic regulation;
  • Oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, glycation, and cellular senescence;
  • Epigenetic regulation and molecular signatures of skin aging;
  • Skin exposome and environmental drivers of aging;
  • Extracellular matrix remodeling, tissue regeneration, and skin resilience;
  • Three-dimensional skin models and reconstructed human skin;
  • Ex vivo human skin models and translational research methodologies;
  • Microfluidic, organ-on-chip, and microphysiological systems;
  • New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and alternative methods to animal testing;
  • Safety and efficacy assessment of cosmetic ingredients, raw materials, and formulations;
  • Advanced imaging, bioengineering, and analytical technologies;
  • Clinical, instrumental, and translational approaches to skin aging research;
  • Innovative cosmetic, dermocosmetic, and biotechnology-based interventions targeting healthy skin aging.

By bringing together fundamental, translational, clinical, and applied research, this Special Issue seeks to advance scientific understanding of skin aging and foster innovative strategies that support healthy skin aging, resilience, and longevity.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cosmetics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
