Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Laser surface treatment is a new technology for the heat treatment of metal surfaces caused by the high-energy thermal effect of laser beams inside. This has achieved obvious results in improving the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance and impact resistance of metal surfaces. The advantages of laser treatment are that it is pollution-free, has a local surface treatment and results in minimal pressure and deformation. Therefore, it has broad application prospects. Laser surface treatment is characterized by fast heating speed, high temperature, no oxidation, small deformation, ultra-fine grain and high fatigue strength. It can achieve self-cooling quenching, especially suitable for local heat treatment, such as the small size of the workpiece, the bottom of the hole and other parts that have difficulty in achieving this with ordinary heat treatment. Laser heat treatment is widely used in the automobile industry. It can be used in many key parts of automobiles. In the large locomotive manufacturing industry, the application of laser heat treatment has greatly improved the life of the locomotive. Laser processing centers of different scales have been established throughout the country, which can carry out laser heat treatment for machine parts of various industries.

The aim of this issue is to consolidate the latest findings related to the preparation and protection of material surfaces and to provide an opportunity for researchers to publish the latest results, reviews, methods and failure reports to understand or solve the problem of material surface treatment through laser-related techniques. We welcome submissions of original, high-quality papers and critical reviews.

This scope of this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers in the following areas:

  • Wear and corrosion resistance of laser-related coatings;
  • New technology and application of laser surface treatment;
  • Understanding the degradation mechanisms of coatings through friction, wear or other dynamic loading conditions and corrosion;
  • Control of oxides during laser cladding;
  • Computer modeling, simulation to predict coating properties, performance, durability and reliability in service environments;
  • The microscopic mechanism of the effect of laser technology on the surface damage, defects and dislocations of materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
