Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent theoretical and technological advances in fusion coatings and additive manufacturing have positioned these fields at the forefront of materials engineering, offering innovative pathways for designing and fabricating high-performance, multifunctional protective systems. Driven by the growing demand for lightweight, durable, and corrosion-resistant components across aerospace, energy, biomedical, and automotive sectors, the integration of fusion-based coating processes with additive manufacturing techniques presents unprecedented opportunities to create complex, tailored material architectures with enhanced properties.

This synergy allows for the development of coatings that not only provide superior barrier functionality but also incorporate geometric complexity and functional gradation unachievable through conventional methods. Current research is increasingly focused on understanding the interplay between microstructure, processing parameters, and performance in extreme environments—including high temperature, mechanical stress, and corrosive conditions.

The scope of this Special Issue will serve as a platform for contributions addressing the following themes:

  • Advances in fusion coating technologies such as thermal spraying, laser cladding, plasma-transferred arc, and cold spray, especially when integrated with additive manufacturing platforms.
  • Design, fabrication, and characterization of novel coating materials—including metals, ceramics, composites, and functionally graded structures—tailored for additive manufacturing processes.
  • Recent advances in laser processing related to surface engineering, such as cladding, ablation, texturing, polishing, etc., laser processing technologies to improve the performance of material surfaces and connections between materials.
  • Research on coating-substrate interdiffusion, bonding mechanisms, residual stress management, and microstructure control in additively manufactured protective layers.
  • Evaluation of coating performance under demanding conditions such as high-temperature oxidation, wear, erosion, thermal cycling, and corrosive environments.
  • Development of in-situ monitoring, process optimization, and intelligent control strategies for hybrid manufacturing of coated components.
  • Modeling and simulation of thermal history, phase evolution, defect formation, and mechanical behavior in fusion-coated additively manufactured structures.
  • Novel applications of fusion coating and additive manufacturing in repairing, remanufacturing, and enhancing surface properties of critical engineering components.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
