Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Surface coating and modification of industrial components can yield a more profitable return in a much shorter time compared to the painstaking and laborious processes of inventing novel materials. With surface modification, their physical, mechanical and chemical durability would be improved. From an economic point of view, surface coating is considered an inexpensive process because only the surface layer needs to be modified. In other words, with surface coating, the key features of a part can be retained while only the outermost surface is modified to tailor to the desired properties. High-entropy alloys (HEAs), newly developed metallic materials with equimolar or non-equimolar compositions, have recently gained attention owing to their superior properties. HEAs are a novel alloy concept beyond the realm of the traditional alloys that exhibit excellent and functional physical and mechanical properties such as high hardness and tensile strength, corrosion, and wear resistance. Compared with the conventional metallic alloys composed of one or two major and some minor elements, HEAs consist of more than four principal elements. In spite of ever-increasing knowledge about the mechanical and physical properties of bulk HEAs, proving a systematical approach for understanding the potential of the high-entropy alloys coating and optimizing their properties are also essential. Considering the fact that numerous parameters such as the design and composition, and coating techniques, can alter the microstructure and properties of the HEAs, it is believed that this Special Issue could be a promising opportunity for the researcher and scientific communities to present their recent findings on HEAs coatings and their applications.

The main scope of the current Special Issue will include but not be limited to the following concepts:

  • Theoretical and experimental research, knowledge, and new ideas in designing and synthesizing HEAs coating.
  • Modeling and simulation to predict the coating features, performance, durability, and reliability in service environments.
  • Coating methods such as Thermal Spray techniques, Cold Spray, PVD, CVD, Laser Cladding, and Plasma Arc Depsoitio etc.
  • Durable, Wear, and Corrosion Resistance HEAs coatings
  • Thick coatings and Thin Films
  • Catalytical Application of HEAs coatings
  • Biomedical and Biological Application of HEAs coatings

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
