Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the critical role of renovation in extending the performance, aesthetics, and sustainability of coated surfaces. While new coatings often receive the spotlight, renovation is where science, craftsmanship, and innovation converge to give materials a second life. This Special Issue highlights diagnostic methods for assessing existing layers, techniques for safe and effective removal, and the importance of thorough surface preparation before re‑application. It also examines advances in environmentally responsible practices, ranging from low‑VOC products to circular approaches that minimize waste. Case studies from industrial, architectural, and heritage contexts illustrate how renovation strategies can restore function, preserve cultural value, and reduce costs compared to full replacement. Emerging technologies such as laser cleaning, nanocoatings, and self‑healing systems demonstrate the future potential of this field. By combining technical expertise with sustainable thinking, coatings renovation proves to be not only a maintenance task but also a vital pathway to durability and resource efficiency.
