Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Minimization of food waste and improvement of the shelf-life of foods are important not only for providing food equity but also for supporting sustainable and economical food systems. Therefore, environmentally friendly and microplastic-free food packaging films and coatings with improved functionalities are recently emerging to enhance sustainable food systems. Novel coating methods with minimal material use, as well as bio-based and biodegradable food packaging films up-cycled or recycled from agricultural or food waste and by-products, are gaining interest for reducing the environmental impact of packaging material production and, consequently, the carbon footprint. These novel coating materials include, but are not limited to, starches, cellulose and modified cellulose fractions, proteins, and lipids.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to food coatings and packaging films made from bio-based and biodegradable materials, as well as novel production methods of coating or films for improving the shelf-life of foods. We welcome contributions addressing the sustainability of food packaging systems, and improving the properties of coating or film packaging film formulations in terms of moisture and gas permeability, mechanical and thermal properties, optical properties, microstructure, and scalability to industrial applications.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel edible food coating materials and applications;
- Extraction and up-cycling of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin for coating and film applications;
- Active and intelligent bio-based coatings with antioxidant or antimicrobial functions;
- Surface modification and coating technologies to improve moisture and gas barrier properties.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
