Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Surface modification and protective coatings in civil engineering are crucial for enhancing the durability, safety, and functionality of infrastructure. They protect construction materials—such as concrete, reinforced concrete, steel, wood, and masonry—from corrosion, weathering, abrasion, aggressive chemical environments, as well as the effects of high temperatures and fire. The dynamic development of this field encompasses a wide range of solutions: from classic polymer and metallic coatings, through water-repellent impregnants and electrochemical systems, to modern geopolymer, hybrid, and nanostructured coatings, as well as smart self-healing systems (smart coatings).

We are pleased to announce a special issue titled “Advanced Protective Coatings and Surface Modification for Civil Engineering Structures: Corrosion, Fire and Thermal Protection”.

We will publish high-quality articles on topics related to this important field, in particular articles concerning:

  • The latest solutions for surface modification and coating of structural elements;
  • The latest advances in all types of surface treatments developed to improve surface properties;
  • The use of unique coating techniques for structural elements to provide: corrosion protection, erosion protection, moisture protection, and fire protection;
  • Diagnosing the effectiveness or wear of protective coatings under environmental conditions;
  • Use of electrochemical methods for the regeneration of concrete reinforcement coatings: cathodic protection, chloride ion extraction, concrete realkalization;
  • Modeling of coating degradation processes caused by the above-mentioned factors.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
