Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Concrete is the most widely used construction material worldwide, yet its production is associated with high energy consumption and significant environmental impacts. To meet global sustainability goals and reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment, innovative approaches to concrete materials, design, and construction are urgently needed. Recent advances focus on developing low-carbon binders, alternative cementitious materials, recycled and waste-based constituents, and high-performance concretes that enhance durability while minimising resource use.

At the same time, emerging construction technologies, performance-based design methods, and life-cycle assessment tools are reshaping how sustainable concrete structures are designed, constructed, and maintained. These innovations contribute to extended service life, improved resilience, reduced maintenance demands, and alignment with circular economy principles.

This Special Issue aims to provide a forum for cutting-edge research and practical applications in sustainable concrete construction, integrating material science, structural engineering, and environmental considerations.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Low-carbon and alternative cementitious materials;
  • Recycled and waste-derived aggregates;
  • Green concrete mix design and optimisation;
  • High-performance and durable concrete;
  • Life-cycle assessment of concrete structures;
  • Repair, retrofitting, and circular economy approaches;
  • Multi-scale modelling of construction material performance.

This Special Issue seeks contributions that advance environmentally responsible and resilient concrete construction practices.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
