Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The energy used for the sector of building accounts for about 40% of the global total energy consumption. To meet this energy demand, a large number of fossil fuels emit excessive greenhouse gases, which is the main reason for the hindrance to realizing carbon neutrality. Thus, the inherent demand for sustainable development will be further met through the combined utilization of energy storage technology and renewable energy sources (such as solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, etc.). Advanced thermal storage technology, as well optimal design and control strategies used in the field of heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), can be adopted to achieve high energy efficiency and low carbon emissions of buildings.

Therefore, in this Special Issue, we invite original contributions to describe new research papers, case studies, projects, reviews, and recent discussions relating to the optimal design and control of the thermal storage systems used in HVAC. Suggested topics of interest for this research topic include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The modeling of thermal energy storage systems and the integration with renewable energy;
  • The optimal design of thermal energy storage systems;
  • The control and operating strategies of thermal energy storage systems;
  • The transient behavior and dynamic performance of thermal energy storage systems;
  • The heat and mass transfer enhancement of thermal energy storage systems;
  • Thermal energy storage materials and thermal performances;
  • Laboratory or field measurements for thermal energy storage systems;
  • Carbon emissions and the economic evaluation of thermal energy storage systems.
