Dear Colleagues,
In an era of ongoing global warming, building structures around the world are more vulnerable than ever to the risk of aggravated natural disasters. One good way of protecting civil structures against the threat of disastrous natural events is to equip them with structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. At present, the majority of these systems are based on technical approaches to structural modal identification and dynamic system/parameter identificaiton. In our experience, however, the main weaknesses of these traditional SHM systems are twofold:
- Measurement noise is usually inherent to SHM systems, and therefore the acceleration/strain samples measured by such systems are likely to be contaminated by such noise. Even though the effects of noise on modal identification can be barely significant, the effect of damage or material alterations could also be minor, resulting in it being submerged in the noise.
- Measurement changes in modal parameters may not necessarily be the effects of damage alone, and could also result from external loads on the structure. Distinguishing one from the other, and accurately identifying the degradation of the material, are topics that deserve our attention.
This Special Issue of Buildings is dedicated to completed and ongoing scientific endeavors addressing the above two technical issues, and works reporting innovative technical approaches to mitigating measurement noise and eliminating loading effects in SHM and dynamic identification of buildings from all around the world are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
