Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Childhood motor disorders including dystonia, spasticity, ataxia, tremor, dyspraxia, and weakness are a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. The burden of such disorders is large in terms of loss of functional ability and loss of societal participation. These disorders can be seen as part of many different underlying diseases and are frequently found in combination in children with cerebral palsy. Part of the difficulty regarding treatment of these disorders lies in the poor understanding of the relationship between the pattern of neural injury and resulting motor deficits. This means that selection of rehabilitation, medication, and orthopedic or neurosurgical intervention is guided by empirical experience with very little model-based understanding of the mechanism of disease or therapy.

This Special Issue of Brain Sciences will explore computational models that explain or describe the link between childhood brain injury and the resulting motor deficits. Models can include neurophysiological, neural system, biomechanical, or kinematic levels of description.

Authors are invited to submit original research, topic reviews, or case studies that will inform neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation clinicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and motor control researchers about current strategies and models for understanding the origin, mechanism, and treatment of childhood motor disorders.

Topics include the following areas: clinical, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, biomechanics, kinematics, and motor learning, applied to childhood motor disorders including weakness, spasticity, dystonia, ataxia, tremor, dyspraxia, and gait and balance disorders. Manuscripts should focus on computational models at any level of description, or that cross levels of description, in order to provide descriptive or explanatory support for clinical and physiological observations. Studies about neurorehabilitation, paired with novel neurophysiological, biomechanical or learning models are welcome.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Brain Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
