Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Various neurological disorders compromise the integrity of the autonomic nervous system. This is a highly relevant problem as autonomic dysfunction significantly reduces quality of life due to a wide range of debilitating symptoms, such as disturbances of the gastrointestinal system, impaired sweating, erectile dysfunction, and bladder dysfunction. Moreover, impairment of cardiovascular autonomic control is associated with increased mortality. In Parkinson’s disease, misfolded alpha-synuclein seems to target the peripheral autonomic nervous system long before centers of motor control are affected. Based on this observation, research has been recently focusing on identifying diagnostic and therapeutic targets within the autonomic nervous system in patients suffering from neurodegenerative synucleinopathies. However, autonomic functional integrity is also frequently impaired in neurovascular disorders such as acute ischemic stroke, neuroinflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and a wide range of neuropathies such as diabetic or toxic neuropathy. Diagnosis and treatment of autonomic dysfunction is challenging due to the complexity of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical manifestations. However, techniques to assess and treat autonomic dysfunction are continuously advancing. This Special Issue provides a platform for research papers, reviews, letters, and protocols that help to improve our understanding of autonomic involvement in neurological disorders and improve clinical management of autonomic impairment.
