Dear Colleagues,
Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease, is characterized by the buildup of plaque inside the walls of arteries. It begins with damage to the endothelium of the artery, leading to narrowing and stiffening of the arteries (hardening of the arteries), restricting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to vital organs. Rupture of the plaque triggers blood clot formation, followed by thrombosis and embolization, contributing to myocardial infarction (coronary artery disease), stroke (carotid artery block), peripheral artery disease, and aneurysm. Inflammation, immune cells, and oxidative stress play a critical role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, aging, male sex, and a family history of early heart disease are common risk factors. Angina, shortness of breath, sudden numbness or weakness in limbs, slurred speech, claudication, and syncope are common symptoms. Quitting smoking, adopting a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, statins, blood pressure medications, blood thinners to prevent clots, angioplasty, bypass surgery, or endarterectomy are management strategies. Attenuating plaque size and vulnerability should be the focus of research. Single-cell RNA sequencing, revealing new cellular mechanisms, nanomedicine for targeted drug delivery, and advanced imaging for precise plaque characterization have advanced the field but still need more research.
This Special Issue aims to gather high-quality research and reviews focusing on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, as well as innovative therapeutic strategies. We welcome submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inflammatory and immune pathways in plaque development and rupture.
- Oxidative stress and metabolic dysregulation.
- Novel molecular targets for therapy.
- Nanotechnology and targeted drug delivery systems.
- Advances in imaging and diagnostic techniques.
- Translational and clinical studies exploring emerging treatments.
We look forward to receiving contributions that will advance the understanding of atherosclerosis and support the development of effective, next-generation therapeutic approaches.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
