Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Rapid advances in the understanding of gene expression have emerged from the integration of experimental, computational, and recently by artificial intelligence-based approaches. The convergence of disciplines such as molecular biology, structural biology, biophysics and bioinformatics has enhanced our comprehension of the molecular mechanisms governing gene regulation and how their dysregulation contributes to disease. Building on these advances, elucidating the functional interplay among proteins, nucleic acids, and small molecules involved in gene expression is a pivotal element in developing innovative therapeutic strategies.
While experimental research provides invaluable insights into the molecular processes regulating gene expression, the integration of computational approaches offers new opportunities to amplify and accelerate these discoveries. By combining data-driven modeling, molecular simulations, and predictive algorithms with experimental findings, researchers can clarify complex gene expression pathways that remain elusive. Such synergy enables the identification of critical molecular determinants, the prediction of functional outcomes of mutations or epigenetic modifications, and the rational design of small molecules against specific targets.
The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together multidisciplinary research efforts focused on understanding and modulating gene expression through structural, experimental and computational approaches. By fostering collaboration among diverse scientific communities, this collection seeks to highlight current trends and innovations that bridge molecular mechanisms and therapeutic applications.
In this context, we invite the submission of original research articles, Reviews, and Perspectives addressing the structural, functional, and regulatory aspects of gene expression and its modulation by natural or designed molecules.
Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
(i) Discovery and characterization of new drug candidates targeting gene expression pathways
(ii) Mechanistic and structural studies on proteins and nucleic acids involved in gene expression
(ii) Integrative computational-experimental strategies for the elucidation and modulation of gene regulatory networks
iv) Functional analysis of novel and/or natural compounds targeting gene expression, including translation inhibitors, small molecules modulating RNA–protein interactions and regulatory RNAs.We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomolecules is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
