Dear Colleagues,
Nature offers highly efficient strategies for mass transfer, structural adaptation, selective transport, and energy management, providing powerful inspiration for next-generation technologies addressing urgent climate and energy challenges. As the world accelerates decarbonization, there is growing demand for innovative solutions for carbon capture, storage and utilization, as well as energy storage, that are not only high-performing but also scalable, resilient, and sustainable. Biomimetic design has emerged as a promising pathway to meet these needs by translating principles observed in natural systems into engineered materials, structures, and processes.
This Special Issue will present and disseminate the most recent advances in nature-inspired energy storage and carbon management, spanning fundamental science, materials innovation, process design, and practical applications. We welcome contributions addressing biomimetic materials, structures, and processes for energy storage, carbon management, resource conversion, and environmental sustainability, including nature-inspired design strategies, functional materials, advanced manufacturing, modelling and simulation, and the development of sustainable devices, systems, and industrial applications. Interdisciplinary studies linking biological inspiration with engineering performance, scalability, and real-world deployment are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Biomimetic materials for carbon capture and gas separation;
- Bio-inspired thermal energy storage and phase change materials;
- Nature-inspired porous and hierarchical architectures;
- Sustainable materials and devices for decarbonization;
- Additive manufacturing of biomimetic energy materials;
- Translation of biomimetic concepts into practical energy applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
