Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biological materials and structures possess outstanding capabilities in load bearing, impact resistance, energy absorption, damage tolerance, adaptability, and multifunctionality. Such inherent natural characteristics offer valuable insights for addressing engineering challenges involving complex structures, multiscale behaviors, and performance‑driven design. Bio‑inspired design and modeling translate these biological principles and mechanisms into computational and theoretical models, design methodologies, and optimization strategies, providing a bridge between biology, mechanics, materials science, and engineering.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in bio‑inspired design and modeling for advanced materials and structures. It focuses on how biological principles and mechanisms can be translated into modeling approaches, optimization methods, and design strategies for solving complex mechanical and structural problems and developing high‑performance engineering systems.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Biomimetics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
