Biomimetic Smart Materials and Interfaces: Design and Application

This special issue belongs to the section “Biomimetics of Materials and Structures“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biomimetic smart materials and interfaces draw inspiration from natural systems to create adaptive, responsive, and functional solutions for a wide range of engineering and technological challenges. These materials can change their properties in response to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, light, or mechanical stress, enabling applications in fields like robotics, healthcare, energy, and environmental science. The design and application of such materials involve interdisciplinary approaches, combining insights from biology, materials science, chemistry, and engineering.

This Special Issue focuses on the latest advancements in the design, fabrication, characterization, and application of biomimetic smart materials and interfaces. We welcome original research and review articles that explore the fundamental principles, novel designs, and practical implementations of these materials. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Bio-inspired material synthesis and design;
  • Stimuli-responsive materials and systems;
  • Smart interfaces for adhesion, wetting, or sensing;
  • Applications in soft robotics, biomedical devices, or energy harvesting;
  • Modeling, simulation and fabrication of biomimetic materials;
  • Sustainability and environmental aspects of biomimetic designs.

We encourage contributions that highlight the synergy between nature and technology, offering innovative solutions for future challenges. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomimetics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
