Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Current knowledge about extremophiles includes a wide variety of prokaryotes and eukaryotes across a large range of environments characterized by hostile living conditions. They exhibit not only great flexibility for thriving under the most life-threatening habitats on Earth but can also survive the harsh conditions of space, which are completely inhospitable to the majority of organisms. As a result, extremophiles’ systems biology, their stress resistance and biochemical adaptation, are currently very much in the focus of microbiology, astrobiology, and biotechnology.

The proteomic investigation of extremophiles has proved to be a powerful tool to explore the physiology and pathways of key proteins, which are possibly involved in tolerance formation to stressful living conditions, in view of climate change and the progressive interest for extraterrestrial microbial activities and resistance against cosmic radiation. The molecular uniqueness and the biotechnological potential of species from the extremes of life have also driven an intense activity of proteomics research aimed at screening for novel proteins and enzymes offering advantages over those from less-tolerant counterparts. Along with unravelling adaptive mechanisms, proteomics of extremophiles holds the potential to contribute to the development of strategies at the gene and protein level ultimately leading to biotechnological innovations.

This Special Issue welcomes submissions of original research and review manuscripts focusing on the application of proteomics to answer questions concerning the adaptation biology of extremophiles and to explore the molecular basis of protein stability and activity and post-translational modifications at extreme values of physicochemical parameters. The ultimate goal is to achieve a precise overview of this novel and interdisciplinary field of microbiology, providing information about the current status of this emerging and promising field of research.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
