Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The neurotransmitter and hormone serotonin plays many modulatory roles in shaping mood, emotional stability, sleep, and our behaviors, both through its effects in the central nervous system and peripheral effects in the gastrointestinal tract and elsewhere in the body. Through numerous autoreceptors and heteroreceptors (from seven different receptor subfamilies), enzymes, and transporters, the serotonin system is among the most tightly regulated in the body. Given this, it is not surprising that serotonin dysregulation is implicated in various psychiatric disorders that occur across the lifespan. While considerable progress has been made since serotonin’s discovery soon after World War II, there is still much to learn to effectively treat psychiatric disorders through targeting and modulation of the serotonin system.

This Special Issue highlights recent advances in our understanding of the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms of serotonin regulation that can underlie psychiatric disorders coming from in vitro and in vivo basic science research. Explorations of novel treatment interventions are featured, from a range of pharmacological, dietary, or environmental approaches.

It aims to foster a deeper understanding of how serotonin regulation in the brain and periphery can affect biomarkers and/or behaviors relevant to psychiatric disorders. We invite you to explore the cutting-edge research presented here, with the goal of advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for people affected by psychiatric disorders across their lifespan.

In this Special Issue, original research articles are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Manipulating the serotonin system or testing pharmacological, dietary or environmental treatments in animal models of psychiatric disorders.
  • Identification of potential biomarkers for various psychiatric conditions.
  • In vitro investigations of cellular or molecular mechanisms of serotonergic regulation by pathological conditions and/or novel treatments.
  • Age-dependent effects or targeting the serotonin system in animals or in vitro.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
